July 31, 2013: SEC Examining Trading on Nonpublic Information in Commodity Markets; NYSE Sees ICE Deal Closing in the Fall; MF Global sues banks for restricting competition in CDS

Fresh off its completion of fixing all major stock market problems, the SEC considers the possibility of beginning to regulate insider trading in commodity markets. The head of NYSE Euronext says that its merger with ICE is on target and headed for a fall completion. MF Global — what’s left of it, anyway — sues a large number of large banks, alleging unfair restriction of competition in the credit-default swap market.

Intern Education Series is Just a Beginning
By John J. Lothian

Based on the success of our quickly assembled Intern Education Series, I believe this is just the beginning for John J. Lothian & Company, Inc. in the education sector.

For months, and even years, industry players have been wanting us to get deeper into market education and I think we have found our niche.

Yesterday we concluded our series of events with presentations by Richard Sandor, Terry Duffy, Rick Lane, Ben Van Vliet, June Furlan and Sam Mele. One attendee told me this was the best event in the series and another told me the highlight of his summer internship was our series.

As part of the conclusion of the series, I asked the interns to become contributors to MarketsWiki. I told them I was starting a program called “MarketsWiki Scholars” which would train them how to “wiki” and also give them rewards for meeting various metrics of contributions by handing out industry swag from our sponsors and supporters. We will arm-twist sponsors for the best t-shirts, golf balls, backpacks and any other schwag we can get donated. Anyone wishing to see your company’s name carried or worn by the future of our industry, please let me know.

Secondly, I told them I was going to try to offer an even bigger piece of cheese for those wanting to participate in the program. I want to create an award, a prize, for the best academic paper by one of the MarketsWiki Scholars on one of the subjects included in our series. I need to find an organization or company to underwrite this prize. We also want the same organization, or organizations, to become the global sponsor(s) of the video series from the Intern Education Series.

If we can do this, then we can include it as part of the Intern Education Series for several years to come. This will help us create an army of social-media-savvy people contributing to MarketsWiki, which will help us get to the next level with the site.

We are also considering expanding the series to New York next summer and perhaps London as well, during or before International Derivatives Week.

The interns we are educating today about the opportunities in our industry represent future of the industry. They also may become customers at end-user firms, or even retail customers. The time to educate these future industry participants is during these formative education years.

So this is our plan. This is what we need to execute. Look for updates on this in the coming weeks. A final thanks to all of the speakers who volunteered their time as well as to those firms who sent their interns to our events. It’s step one with bigger steps to come.
