VIX Roars Into September
John Nyaradi, Wall Street Sector Selector
The VIX index did not hesitate to surge into September today as the index rose 2.92% to close in the green. VIX ETFs did not respond so well, as the iPath S&P 500 Short Term Futures ETN (NYSEARCA:VXX) closed .7% in the red, and the VelocityShares Daily 2X VIX Short-Term ETN (NYSEARCA:TVIX) lost 2.68% today. The gap between a positive VIX index and negative VIX ETNs likely represents the fact that most VIX ETNs do not directly track the VIX index itself, but rather futures contracts associated with the “fear” component of the S&P 500.
